eharmony review 2026: the questionnaire that refuses to go out of style

eharmony still asks you to answer questions before it introduces you to anyone. For people who want something lasting, that patience is the point; the price and the app ratings are the catch.

Every 14 minutes, eharmony says, someone finds love on its service. The footnote is candid about the source (“eharmony user data”), but the boast captures how the company has always wanted to be seen: less an app than a matchmaking service with a method. Since 2000, that method has been a questionnaire, and in 2026 it still is.

Spend a few minutes on eharmony’s homepage and the contrast with the swipe apps is stark. There is no talk of modes or boosts or AI assistants. There is a Compatibility Quiz, a Personality Profile and a promise of matches who share “your values, interests, and goals”. Whether that sounds restful or restrictive will decide whether eharmony is for you.

Our verdict on eharmony

eharmony is the most structured service in our top five, and for people who know they want a long-term relationship, its insistence on doing the homework first is a real strength. Everyone completes the Compatibility Quiz, matches come with a rationale, and the people you meet have at least signed up for something serious. The free Basic membership is more useful than it once was, letting you view profiles and exchange first messages.

The weaknesses are practical rather than philosophical. Unlimited messaging and full photo access require Premium; eharmony’s own cost pages don’t list prices; and its Google Play rating of 2.9 is the lowest of any app we rank highly, with recurring complaints about cancellation. It also says very little in public about how it verifies members. We rate it 8.6, a score that reflects the quality of its matching approach more than the polish of its app.

How eharmony works: the Compatibility Quiz first

You can’t browse eharmony before you take the Compatibility Quiz. According to the site, it asks “thoughtful questions” about you and what you want, and your answers create a Personality Profile that drives your match suggestions. eharmony doesn’t publish the number of questions on its homepage or cost pages.

Once you are through, the eharmony app on Google Play shows a matching score on each suggested profile. The developer says your profile needs to be at least 50% complete before you can get going, which is a small but telling demand: eharmony expects effort, and it assumes the people you’ll meet have made it too.

From there it works much like any dating service. You send and receive likes, see a Discover list of suggestions and message people you are interested in. eharmony also offers local pages for singles in cities across the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and dating filters for communities including Muslim, Asian, Black, gay and lesbian singles, according to its UK homepage.

What the matching is (and isn’t)

eharmony’s pitch rests on compatibility, and its own figures are the only evidence offered for how well that works. The site claims more than 2 million people have found love through it. Its “#1 trusted dating app” line rests on a 2022 survey of 1,300 respondents in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and its “highest quality dating pool” claim on a 2023 survey of 2,807 dating app users in the same countries. These are company-commissioned figures rather than independent research, and we would read them as such. What is verifiable is the design: matching that starts from stated values and goals rather than photos.

eharmony profiles and matching in practice

The best thing about eharmony, in our assessment, is the tone it sets. Because everyone arrives through the same questionnaire, profiles tend to be more complete and intentions clearer than on the open-ended swipe apps. If your experience of dating apps is a stream of one-word openers, the slower pace may come as a relief.

The flip side is a smaller, more specific pool. eharmony isn’t designed for browsing for fun or for casual dating, and if you live outside a large city you may see fewer suggestions than on Tinder or Bumble. It works best for people who are clear about wanting a committed relationship, and probably for those who have found the swipe apps unrewarding.

eharmony cost: Basic vs Premium membership

eharmony has two levels: free Basic and paid Premium.

According to eharmony’s US cost page, Basic includes: – Access to singles and unlimited matches – All messaging tools, with limited messaging – No time limit on the free membership

The homepage adds that Basic members can take the quiz, view profiles, send and receive initial likes and first messages, and see who has visited their profile.

Premium adds: – Unlimited messaging – All members’ photos – A full list of who has viewed you – Your complete Personality Profile – Changeable search settings, including location and age filters – Dedicated customer service

In the US, Premium comes in three-, six- and twelve-month terms, and you can pay by major credit or debit card or PayPal. The UK cost page is less consistent: one section mentions three, six or twelve months and another six, twelve or 24 months. Neither page lists prices. eharmony says you’ll see them after logging in and choosing “Upgrade to Premium”, which makes like-for-like comparison with rivals difficult. We couldn’t verify current prices, so we haven’t quoted any.

Is eharmony Premium worth it?

If you intend to use eharmony properly, Premium is close to essential: limited messaging and hidden photos make the free tier a taster rather than a working membership. The question is commitment. Plans run for months, not weeks, so it makes sense to use Basic first to judge the quality and number of your matches. And read the renewal terms. On Google Play, a number of reviewers report difficulty cancelling or finding a monthly option; in its replies the developer says cancellations are assessed against its policies and the terms shown at sign-up. Those are user claims, but they are frequent enough to take seriously.

Is eharmony safe? Trust, verification and data

eharmony says it has “thoughtful safeguards”, “clear guidance” and a dedicated Trust and Safety team, and its UK cost page says it clamps down on fraudsters and fake profiles. What it doesn’t do, on the pages we reviewed, is explain how: there is no public description of photo or ID verification of the kind Tinder, Hinge and Bumble now offer. That doesn’t mean checks don’t happen, only that eharmony doesn’t spell them out, and it is the main reason this review’s safety assessment is more cautious than for its rivals.

On data, the developer’s Google Play safety section says the app may share personal information and device identifiers with third parties, may collect location and other data types, encrypts data in transit and lets users request deletion. That is broadly standard for the category, but worth knowing.

Whatever service you use, the basic rules apply: keep conversations on the platform until you trust someone, and never send money to a person you haven’t met. Our romance scam statistics set out why.

Who owns eharmony now

eharmony was founded in 2000 and is based in Los Angeles. In 2018 it was bought outright by NuCom Group and PARSHIP ELITE Group, both part of the German media company ProSiebenSat.1, according to ProSiebenSat.1’s announcement. It now sits within ParshipMeet Group, alongside brands such as MeetMe and LOVOO; eharmony’s own site lists careers under ParshipMeet.

The ownership may not be permanent. In 2023 ProSiebenSat.1 said its dating business was no longer core and that it was looking for a new owner, Global Dating Insights reported. In March 2025 ProSiebenSat.1 agreed to buy out General Atlantic’s minority stake in ParshipMeet, with General Atlantic receiving a fixed payment if ParshipMeet is later sold, according to Reuters via Yahoo Finance. And in its first-half 2026 results, ProSiebenSat.1 said its dating portfolio had been hit by consumer restraint in Germany and the US. None of this changes how eharmony works today, though it may help explain why the product has changed less visibly than its rivals have.

eharmony vs Match: two veterans, two philosophies

eharmony and Match are the two names most people think of when they picture “proper” online dating, and they arrived at the same audience from opposite directions. Match, which has operated since 1995, hands you the controls: you set filters, state your Dating Intention and search. eharmony, five years younger, takes the controls away: you answer the quiz and it decides whom to show you, with a compatibility score attached.

The practical differences follow from that. Match runs in-person events and time-limited formats such as 72 Hours, and in the US lets free members message their matches. eharmony keeps unlimited messaging for Premium members and sells longer plans. If you trust your own judgement and enjoy searching, Match is likely to suit you better; if you would rather someone else did the sifting, eharmony’s model is the more restful one. Our Match review covers its tiers and pricing in detail.

Who eharmony suits (and who should skip it)

eharmony suits people who want a long-term relationship and are willing to invest time before meeting anyone. It suits those who find swipe apps shallow or exhausting, and anyone who likes the idea of a match arriving with a reason attached.

Skip it if you want casual dating, a large pool to browse, or transparent month-to-month pricing. Anyone who places a high value on visible verification badges may also prefer Hinge or Bumble.

eharmony’s published ratings are its weakest point. On 19 October 2026 the Android app held 2.9 out of 5 from about 66,900 reviews on Google Play in the UK, where it has more than 10 million downloads.
